This is a great time to start thinking about goals. Perhaps you are preparing to assess your 2023 goals, or you are ready to reset for 2024 with new goals. When setting goals it is important to keep them realistic. Of course, we’d all love to shatter our previous records with huge numbers, but setting goals at an unattainable level can potentially lead to disappointment, stress, and decreased quality.

S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It is a framework for setting clear and effective goals. When you set S.M.A.R.T. goals, you increase the likelihood of achieving them because they are well-defined and focused.

Let’s break down each component of the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting framework:

Specific

Your goal should be clear and specific. It should answer the questions: What do you want to accomplish? Why is it important? Who is involved? Where will it happen? What are the constraints or limitations?

For example, a non-specific goal might be: “Increase website traffic.” A specific goal would be: “Increase organic website traffic by 20% in the 4th quarter by optimizing SEO and publishing high-quality blog content.”

Measurable

Your goal should be quantifiable and measurable. You need to have a way to track your progress and determine when you have achieved the goal. It answers questions like: How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

In the example above, the goal is measurable because it specifies a 20% increase in organic website traffic. You can measure this using web analytics tools.

Achievable

Your goal should be realistic and attainable. While it’s good to set challenging goals, they should still be possible given the resources, time, and constraints you have. Setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration and demotivation.

For instance, if your website typically sees a 5% increase in organic traffic per quarter, setting a goal of 200% growth might not be achievable. Instead, aim for an improvement that is challenging but realistic.

Relevant

Your goal should be relevant to your overall objectives and align with your values. It should be worthwhile and make sense in the context of your broader plans. Consider whether the goal is consistent with your long-term plans and the resources available.

If your business goal is to increase your regional footprint, a relevant marketing goal might be to increase website traffic from outside your 100-mile radius.

Time-bound

Your goal should have a specific time frame or deadline. It answers the question: When will this be accomplished? Setting a timeframe creates a sense of urgency and helps you prioritize your efforts.

For the first example goal, it is time-bound because it specifies the 4th quarter as the timeframe for achieving a 20% increase in organic website traffic.

By incorporating these five S.M.A.R.T. elements into your goal-setting process, you create goals that are clear, trackable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This not only helps in achieving your goals but also provides a structured approach to planning and measuring your progress. Additionally, it makes it easier to assess whether you have successfully reached your goals or if adjustments are needed along the way.
